2013 Greater New Orleans Suzuki Summer Music Institute
July 14-20, 2013
University of New Orleans

What is Suzuki Summer Music Institute?
It is a wonderful, fun but intense week for Suzuki students, families, teachers and teacher trainees to enhance their music education. Suzuki teachers come from all parts of the country to offer fine points of music instructions that compliment the music teaching that goes on throughout the year. The students grow tremendously during the week and will be highly motivated for the upcoming academic year, with a new love and appreciation for music and their musical instruments.

Summer Institute Location
Summer Institute will be held in the University of New Orleans (UNO) Performing Arts Center located at 2000 Lakeshore Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana. UNO is a full curriculum School of Music in the heart of New Orleans, beautifully situated on Lake Pontchartrain, 10 minutes from downtown and the French Quarter, easily accessible from the airport and major interstates, with ample parking adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. Lodging information is provided under the Summer Institute Housing tab.

Summer Institute Times
Summer Institute days begin at 8:30am and end with the Chamber Music Elective from 3:30-4:30pm. Lunch will not be provided; there are nearby restaurants for those with transportation, an on-campus cafeteria within walking distance, and tables for those who prefer to bring their own bag lunch. Special concerts are held daily immediately following lunch and are mandatory for all participants.

Parent or Guardian
A parent or guardian is required to accompany young children for the duration of the camp. Many Suzuki parents are able to "buddy up" with another parent to ensure that every child is chaperoned. For assistance coordinating chaperone buddies contact the Forum at gnosuzukiforum@gmail.com

Families with multiple children attending the camp only pay one registration fee.

Summer Institute Activities
  1. Special mid-day concerts are mandatory for all participants. Wednesday's Faculty Concert is an inspiration to students while giving them a chance to get the know the teachers better. Tuesday and Thursday, the students are given the opportunity to take the stage performing solo repertoire they have prepared in advance. Interested students should notify their masterclass teacher. Final selections will be made by teaching faculty and announced on Tuesday morning. The Friday Mid-Day Concert is the culmination presentation from the orchestral repertoire-reading classes. Students are asked to wear their camp t-shirts and jeans for this performance
  2. The Fiddle Concert demonstrates the work taking place in the Fiddling classes
  3. The Final Concerts are held Friday afternoon for piano and harp, Saturday morning for strings and flutes. These concerts present the repertoire learned in the group classes and are a wonderful demonstration of the quality of teaching and student talent at the Institute. The students are asked to wear dress clothes.
  4. Dress-Up days occur Monday through Thursday. Each day children are invited to wear specific clothing just for fun, and those who participate in this optional activity are recognized immediately following lunch and are awarded a small prize. Dress-Up days are:
  • Monday: Mismatch Day
  • Tuesday: USA Day - Red, White, and Blue
  • Wednesday: Inside-Out Day
  • Thursday: Crazy Hat Day

Luthier

Lafargue Pianos will be on site during Institute hours. They will have music materials, supplies, books, CD's, and T-shirts. They also offer string replacement, bow re-hairs, and other minor repairs.
